AquaPak Survival Swimming Program

Developed in collaboration with the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth, the Singapore Life Saving Society's (SLSS) AquaPak program is a comprehensive water safety and survival swimming program designed for beginners. This program bridges the gap between learning to swim and lifesaving skills, focusing on water confidence, foundational techniques, and emergency preparedness.

Key Aspects of AquaPak:

  • Core Skills: Develops buoyancy, breath control, and energy-saving strokes like survival backstroke and sidestroke.

  • Survival Techniques: Teaches treading water, sculling, and using clothing or Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for buoyancy.

  • Water Safety: Covers deep-water entry, underwater skills, and swimming with clothes on.

  • Progression: Builds confidence through calm, controlled, and efficient swimming.

  • Rescue Knowledge: Introduces basic rescue skills, including the use of rescue aids like boards and ropes.

Water Safety Award

Safe Entry

Question: Why is it important to use a slide-in entry?

 

Answer: Depth of water and condition of the bottom are unknown. This controlled entry allows your feet to feel for any unknown dangers (sharp objects/creatures, soft ground) 

 

Breathing & Calmness

Question: How does blowing bubbles underwater help you stay safe in the pool?

Answer: It helps control breathing, keeps you calm when underwater, and prevents swallowing water accidentally.


Seeking Help

Question: If you feel exhausted and struggle in the water, what is the safest way to get help?

Answer: Shout for help and seek attention from bystander, and hold onto a float or rescue pole given by the rescuer and be guided to safety.

Underwater Vision

Question: Why do we practice opening our eyes without goggles under water?

Answer: To accustom in any water condition and search for an object, or notice of any dangers without goggles on.

Entry Safety

Question: If you are tired or in trouble, what should you do first?

 

Answer: Call for help, raise one arm, and swim to a floating aid or reach for help.

Question: How does floating on your front or holding onto an aid help you in an emergency?

 

Answer: It helps to maintain head above water and save energy


Underwater Awareness

Question: Why do we practice a surface dive to pick up an item without goggles?

 

Answer: Build water confidence without goggles and to conduct a search for emergencies.

Entry Safety
Question: When can we use a Step in?

 

Answer: Water is clear, the depth known and the bottom free from obstacles. 

Rescue & Floating
Question: If you are tired while swimming and see a floating aid nearby, what should you do?

 

Answer: Call for help, swim to the aid, hold on, and float on front to rest and wait for help to arrive.

Underwater Awareness
Question: Why do we practice a surface dive to pick up an item without goggles?

 

Answer: Build water confidence without goggles and to conduct a search for emergencies.

Waterskills 3 Award

Entry
Question: When and why do we use demonstrate Compact Jump?

 

Answer: This entry is executed from a height of more than 1 meter into deep water, feet -first, usually used for an emergency disengagement with protection of the vital organs.

Question: Provide some examples of dangers of open water?

 

Answer: Bad weather such as lightning;

Strong currents;

Sea creatures;

Unclear waters for sharp/dangerous objects

 

Behavior in, on or around water
Question: Provide some examples of what NOT to do at swimming pool or open water?

 

Answer: Do NOT run at wet and slippery areas

Do NOT swim at unknown depth

Do NOT swim without adult supervision

Do NOT horseback ride

Water Survival
Question: Why do we tread water/scull or float?

 

Answer: To stay afloat, conserve energy, for either waiting for rescue or swimming to safety.

Question: Why do we demonstrate land base rescues?

 

Answer: Learn to stay safe and avoid from becoming a second victim while still helping the victim effectively.

Question:  What is the purpose of clothing swim?

 

Answer: To prepare for real-life situations where clothes and no goggles make swimming harder, and to build confidence in unexpected conditions.

Answer: To protect the head and face from hitting any form of debris.

Energy Conservation
Question: How do we conserve energy when treading water?

 

Answer: By using the egg beater kick during thread water.

Question: What is the purpose of HELP position when in PFD?

 

Answer: To conserve body temperature, prevent body heat loss, and stay safe while waiting for rescue in real emergencies.

Answer: To be safe in or out of the water.
